This is an 1874‑H Canadian 25 cents (Queen Victoria “Laureate” quarter) in About Good to Good (AG‑3 to G‑4) condition, heavily circulated but still identifiable.
Coin description
- Type and date: 25 Cents, 1874 with “H” mint mark below the ribbon, struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England.
- Design:
- Obverse: Young bust of Queen Victoria facing left with legend “VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA CANADA.”
- Reverse: Crown above denomination “25 CENTS” within a maple‑leaf wreath, date 1874 at bottom with bow and “H” below.
- Specifications: 0.925 silver, 5.81 g, 23.88 mm, reeded edge.
Obverse grading analysis
- Wear pattern: Portrait is almost flat; hair detail, facial features, ear, and ribbon are largely worn away, leaving only the general outline of the head and bun.
- Legend and rim: Letters remain mostly readable but are weak at several points, with some merging into the rim; denticles are worn down and incomplete.
- Surface condition: Even, dull grey tone with numerous small circulation marks but no major gouges or signs of harsh cleaning, typical for low‑grade Victorian silver.
Reverse grading analysis
- Central detail: Crown, “25 CENTS” and the date 1874 are faint; interiors of the crown and numerals are nearly blended with the field, an AG–G indicator.
- Wreath: Maple leaves are heavily worn with most inner veins gone; only leaf outlines and a few stem details remain.
- Rim and mintmark: Rim is mostly intact with flattened denticles; the bow and “H” mintmark are visible but weak.
Overall grade opinion and value context
- The major devices and legends are still visible but lack nearly all inner detail, placing this coin at AG‑3 on a strict scale, up to G‑4 on a generous market grading.
